The concept of "signature work" for a choreographer is usually the result of productions being featured in performances over a period of time, with which the artists or artist's company becomes identified. During it's 28 years of ongoing activities, the Rod Rodgers Dance Company has become known for:
  • a series of Contemporary RhythmDances in which dancers contribute to the musical environment with hand-held instruments as they move, Percussion Suite; Tangents; Ictus & Rhythm Ritual
  • "BOX '71" which has been described as a masterpiece of dance as Social Commentary, according to critics, comments on the horror of the prison system and the relationship between those who are both inside and outside prisons realistically and metaphorically.
  • The POETS & PEACEMAKERS series of dance theater tributes celebrate the creative struggles of Black Heroes and includes tributes to: the great poet Langston Hughes (Langston Lives! Featuring music by Noel Pointer); to Civil Rights Leader Martin Luther King, Jr. (The Legacy featuring Music by Coleridge Taylor-Perkinson); Duke Ellington (Echoes of Ellington featuring music Jazz great Billy Taylor); George Washington Carver (Against Great Odds featuring music by Jimmy Owens and integral Designs by Eve Sandler) and an uplifting suite of dances heroic women of color dedicated to Harriet Tubman (Keep On Goin'. . .) featuring music by Joe Henderson.
  • Ongoing creative investment in dance theater by this company, exploring issues inspired by humanitarian concerns and celebrating the experience of people of color continues to be a hallmark of the RRDC. QUEST..., to music by Morrocon composer Hassan Hakmoun and virtuoso percussionist Adam Rudolph, inspired by the legendary "Malcolm X" which was developed with assistance from Betty Shabbaz, is an example of this.
  • EQUINOX IMAGES, a stylish contemporary ethnic work, is based on music by virtuoso pianist George Winston, is one of Rodgers' repertoire pieces that has been performed by several other companies on many occasions.
