ARTS IN EDUCATION
Programs like the ones this company has successfully shared with students and teachers in Tri-State Area Schools in recent years reflect a long time interest of RRDC in making dance theater understandable and accessible to young (culturally underexposed) audiences, differently than simply putting on concerts.
Combinations of workshops and assembly events are offered as vehicles for positive dialogue and instruction about a varietyof subjects. For many students who spend increasing amounts of time sitting as well as working with computers and watching TV, just having opportunities to participate in non-competitive rhythmic movement exercise that invites creativity can be valuable. A variety of material from our thematic repertoire, i.e. our signature series of contemporary RhythmDances, Jazz Studies and uplifting tributes to Black Heroes, has been well received by enthusiastic audiences of all ages, again causing us to marvel at the openness of youngsters to many ideas that can be expressed through dance in ways that help stimulate new consideration of familiar subjects and important issues.
Opportunities to combine (participatory) workshops with Lecture-Demonstrations in many schools provide a basis for students' physically exploring basic ideas and techniques employed in our dance, which has always been an interdisciplinary form. Also, it is a chance to see artists in performances that require a combination of athletic, dramatic and music abilities.
Approach to dance study can provide helpful contexts for exploring a variety of vocabulary concepts, i.e. diagonal, pivotal, alternate, variation, opposite, expand, spin, spiral, interpret, improvise, etc, that can be made vivid in creative movement workshops, contributing to understanding new vocabulary while enhancing appreciation of different cultures.
